Vaman Jayanti 2009
Sri Vaman Jayanti is believed to be the day when Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana incarnation. Lord Vamana (a dwarf) is the fifth of the 10 Avatars (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu. The arrival of Vaman was a divine intervention to help Devas (Demi gods) who had lost their power to King Bali. Vaman Jayanti 2009 date is September 1.Vaman Jayanti is observed on the 12th day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in Bhadrapad month.
Lord Vamana – Fifth Incarnation of Lord Vishnu:
Lord Vamana is the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the first avatar of Treta Yuga. Vamana is the first ever avatar of Lord Vishnu who appears in a complete human form. He is in the form of dwarf Brahmin.This avatar takes place in the Treta-yuga or second age of the Universe. The king of the Daityas or Asuras, one Mahabali had become powerful with the force of his austerities. Devas even had to vacate heaven for him, as they could not stand up against his might or his force of personality.
Nevertheless, they complained to their nominal mother, Aditi, the wife of the great rishi Kashyapa. Aditi's fervent pleas convinced Vishnu to do something and remedy this situation, especially as Mahabali was beginning to show signs of being corrupted by power.Lord Vishnu agreed to be born to Aditi and Kashyapa as a dwarfish son, so as to disguise the potential threat he was. Thereafter Lord Vishnu was born to Aditi and Kashyapa as Lord Vamana. During this Bali was holding a great festival-sacrifice 'Ashwamedhas'(a yagna), and he announced that he would satisfy the desires of all who turned up. for this opportunity and asked him to grant as much land as he could cover in three steps. Mahabali granted the request thinking how much land the dwarf can take using three steps, when he has the entire universe in his disposal. King Mahabali agreed to give Vamanaji, a dwarf brahmin, to give three steps of land. Shukracharya, Mahabali’s Guru, warned him that the dwarf brahmin is Vishnu and not an innocent brahmachari. But Bali ignored his warning and went ahead to donate three steps of land.
Suddenly, Vamanaji took a gigantic form and in one step covered the whole heaven, and with the second step the earth and netherworld (Pathalam). As there was no more space left to keep the third feet, Mahabali lowered his head and Vamanaji placed his foot on it and sent Mahabali down below to rule the netherworld (Pathalam). Seeing him thus humbled, Vamanji became very pleased and told Bali that henceforth I would permanently reside in his palace.
